The Miller Analogies Test (MAT)

Effective Fall 1994, all applicants for the Counselor Education program at Central Michigan University are required to submit a recent (not more than five years old) Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score.  The MAT is available at college testing centers across the state, usually for a fee of about $60.00, although this fee may vary from test site to test site.

Like the GRE, the MAT is designed to measure scholastic aptitudes for graduate-level studies.  However, unlike the GRE, the MAT is a strictly verbal test.  The MAT is intended to measure your ability to recognize relationships between ideas, your fluency in the English language, and your general knowledge of literature, philosophy, history, science, mathematics, and fine arts.  It requires the student to discern in 60 minutes logical relationships for 120 varied analogy problems.

The CMU Computer Based Testing Center offers the MAT on an arranged basis. Contact their office at (989) 774-1092 for information and to make an appointment .

The MAT is also available at the following colleges and universities in Michigan:

Ann Arbor University of Michigan (734) 764-8312
Big Rapids Ferris State University (231) 591-3628
Detroit Wayne State University (313) 577-3400
East Lansing Michigan State University (517) 355-8385
Ironwood Gogebic Community College (906) 932-4231
Kalamazoo Western Michigan University (616) 387-1850
Mt. Pleasant Central Michigan University (989) 774-1092
Rochester Oakland University (248) 370-3229
Sault St. Marie Lake Superior State University (906) 635-2452

Preparation manuals are often available at, or may be ordered through, local or online bookstores.

ATTENTION: MAT scores must be received at the Counselor Education office at CMU by the application deadline date (February 1, or September 1). Tests are sent out to be scored and results usually take at least three weeks to arrive at the designated institution(s). Be sure you take the MAT far enough in advance of the application deadline for your results to arrive on time.

CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity within its community.
