Master of Arts in Counseling: School Counseling

The School Counseling option is designed for students with Teacher Certification who wish to earn a School Counselor Endorsement or for those without a teaching certificate who wish to pursue a Michigan School Counseling License. Potential work settings would include elementary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, or K-12 schools. In addition, School Counseling graduates will meet the academic requirements for licensure as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) in Michigan.

Preliminary Employment Authorization to Work as a School Counselor
(leading to counselor licensure)

This course outline is for CMU Counseling Students without teacher certification, so that they may obtain preliminary employment authorization to work as a school counselor upon completion of 40-41 graduate credit hours. Additional credits are required for the M.A. in Counseling degree and for school counselor licensure.

Preliminary Employment Authorization to Work as a School Counselor

This course outline is for CMU Counseling Students who possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, so that they may obtain preliminary employment authorization to work as a school counselor upon completion of 35 graduate credit hours. Additional credits are required for the M.A. in Counseling degree and for school counselor endorsement.
Current Professional Counseling Students Seeking School Counseling Licensure

This course outline is for current CMU Professional Counseling Students without teacher certification, who also wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
Returning CMU Professional Counseling Graduates with a 48-hour Degree Seeking School Counseling Licensure

This course outline is for past CMU students who earned a M.A. in Counseling Degree (in the Professional Counseling concentration), do not have teacher certification, and wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
Returning CMU Counseling Graduates with a Degree of Less than 48 Hours Seeking School Counseling Licensure

This course outline is for past CMU students who earned a M.A. in Counseling Degree that was less than 48 hours, do not have teacher certification, and wish to pursue school counseling licensure.
School Counselor Endorsement for Those with a Previous Master's Degree (Non-Counseling)

This course outline is for past those who earned a Master's degree in a discipline other than Counseling, currently possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, and wish to pursue school counseling endorsement and employment as a Michigan school counselor
